The “Akuru Pinkama” Samurdhi Book Donation Programme
The “Akuru Pinkama” Samurdhi Book Donation Programme, aimed at providing books to the libraries of Samurdhi Kekulu Children’s Societies, was successfully implemented in the Galle District.
A book collection program named “A Thousand Books , A Thousand Eyes- Samurdhi Akuru Pinkama” was organized jointly by the District Secretariat - Galle and the District Samurdhi Division for the Samurdhi libraries operated in parallel with the Samurdhi Kekulu Children’s Societies, which represent low-income children in the Galle District.
The aim of this program is to minimize children addicting with digital screens and inculcate their interest in reading, and provide them with opportunities to read and enjoy books.
This program was implemented by the Social Development and Environmental Division of the District Samurdhi Office under the guidance of the District Secretary- Galle Mr. W. A. Dharmasiri and coordination of the Galle District Director of Samurdhi, Mrs. H. U. Kanchana Chathurani. Through the generosity of donors, books they had finished reading, as well as new books of their choice, were collected and distributed to the Samurdhi Kekulu Children’s Society libraries for the benefit of the children.
As an initial step, donations were collected from the officers working in the institutions located within the District Secretariat premises, and the District Secretary also joined the programme by donating books. By the end of the day, more than 2,000 books had been collected to be handed over to the Samurdhi Kekulu Children’s Society Libraries. These books are expected to be distributed in the future according to the book requirements of the Samurdhi Kekulu Children’s Society Libraries in the district.
